Q: I race a 12-second bracket car and I need to replace my Snell SA2005 helmet. Can you tell me what rating is currently required for my car’s class? A: As of Jan. 1, 2017, a Snell SA2005 helmet no longer meets NHRA requirements. For cars running 13.99 or quicker, you’ll need a Snell SA2010

  While SFI specifications are the thing by which most auto racing safety equipment is measured, your helmet is a different animal. Helmets are rated by the Snell Memorial Foundation, and in most instances, a helmet’s Snell specification will dictate whether it is suitable for a particular racing application, or allowed by a motorsports sanctioning body.
