‘Need for Speed’: An Inside Look at the Latest Racing Movie
[portfolio_slideshow id=29220]
It’s a small wonder it took movie makers so long to get here.
Maverick and Goose felt the need for speed in “Top Gun” in 1986.
Then, eight years later, the rest of us did after Electronic Arts launched the first Need for Speed video game in 1994, which—now 20 years and 20 titles later—is the world’s most commercially successful video game franchise in history and one of our 10 favorite racing video games.
Today, the film adaptation of “Need for Speed” is being released in theaters nationwide. It stars Aaron Paul (Jessie Pinkman from TV’s Breaking Bad).
Early reviews suggest the film may leave a little something to be desired in the substance department. But are we going for substance? Or are we going for cheap thrills and fast cars? Exactly.
We applaud director Scott Waugh for choosing to film all of the high-speed racing scenes with real cars and real camera work. There are no CGI special effects in this movie. The super cars they destroy are well-made replicas worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Word is they sent some careening off cliffs.

Director: “Can we shoot that scene again?”
Crew: “Uhh. No. We’re out of $300,000 Bugatti replicas. We totally blew up that last one.”
Director: “Oh. Right. Good job, everyone. We got it.”
…
